The $150 Billion Decommissioning Challenge in Oil Gas

  • Sloan School of Management E62-276 (map)

The decommissioning of oil wells and platforms is expensive, complex, and becoming increasingly important. By 2040, up to 3,000 oil and gas platforms will need to be decommissioned. The costs are equally staggering: in the North Sea alone, these decommissioning costs will reach in excess of $150 billion. While these projects are fraught with technical, operational, and organizational complexity, there is an enormous value opportunity to aligning governments, operators, and contractors to deliver this work safely and efficiently.
