The tour series organized by the Energy Club provides members and affiliates with the opportunity to visit a variety of facilities related in some way to energy. These tours often overlap with the other activities provided by the club to help reinforce a particular speaker lecture or discussion topic. These tours are great ways to see and learn about energy-related projects/activities first-hand.

Past tours have included opportunities to visit working nuclear power and coal power plants in Seabrook, New Hampshire, and Brayton Point in Massachusetts as well as the Hull wind turbine. Closer to MIT/Boston, we have visited the Artists for Humanity EpiCenter, a green building with Platinum LEED certification, explored EnerNOC's Network Operations, and visited the MIT Cogeneration Facility on campus.

We are also open to looking into tours of any facilities that members or affiliates have interest in, so be sure to contact us with your ideas. To suggest a tour, or if you're interested in hosting a relevant tour, please feel free to contact the Tour Coordinator, Daniel Apo.

The Dorm Electricity Competition is the first of its kind in MIT's history. All eleven undergrad dorms will compete this spring to conserve the most electricity over a two month period. The winning dorm will receive $10,000 in energy efficient retrofits and dorm improvements. Come be a part of this exciting new, event and change the way MIT uses energy.

Biodiesel@MIT

An emerging MIT campus energy project devoted to converting MIT waste vegetable oil into biodiesel for consumption in the MIT shuttle fleet. This project intends to implement waste vegetable oil processing and use as biodiesel, as well as pushing advanced research into biodiesel quality issues and biodiesel production from high oil content algae. Organizations with intent to support Biodiesel@MIT include the MIT Energy Club, MIT Facilities, the MIT Environmental Programs Office, and GreenFuel Technologies.

MIT is fielding a team for the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon Competition for the first time. Get involved in building an advanced modular solar home!

The Solar Decathlon is an international competition challenging college teams from around the globe to blend aesthetics and modern conveniences with maximum energy production and optimal efficiency. The purpose of the competition is to challenge students to think in new ways about energy, to increase public awareness about renewable energy and energy efficiency and to help move solar energy technologies to the marketplace faster.

Over the past 20 years, the MIT Solar Electric Vehicle Team (SEVT) has designed and built 10 vehicles and raced them all over the world. We have promoted alternative energy and transportation through our participation in races as well as in local fairs and community events. We are committed to continuing our strong racing tradition and also to solving real-world transportation problems with efficient, green, and appropriate design. We are always looking for new members at every level of experience.

The Energy Club is seeking to support student-driven campus energy initiatives. Possibilities abound, including dorm energy use reduction competitions, campus energy efficiency audits, analysis and reduction of fume hood energy usage (a dominant energy user on campus), and many many more.

Energy Classes at MIT

MIT Energy Classes

There are a wide range of energy related classes taught each semester at MIT. Many graduate students and advanced undergraduates start their energy studies at MIT by taking "Sustainable Energy: Choosing Amongst Option" taught by Tester et. al, and "Applications of Technology in Energy and Environment" taught by Deutch and Lester. These courses provide an excellent foundation for further energy studies.

The MIT Energy Initiative has collected an exhaustive list of energy-related classes that can be found at the following website: MIT Energy Classes website.

IAP Energy Courses

IAP is a great time to get a taste of MIT energy-related classes.

Check offerings by category on the IAP website (here in 2011) and enjoy!

Additional Energy Class Resources

Some lecture notes and syllabi for old energy course offerings at MIT are available through the OpenCourseWare system (e.g. Sustainable Energy class notes from spring 2005). With cross registration, MIT students may also want to check out energy related courses at Harvard.

MIT Professional Education

MIT Professional Education offers many energy-related short courses taught by MIT faculty on campus each summer. These courses are from 2-6 days long (usually 5 days) and are designed for professional audiences. Information on current course offerings are available at the following website: MIT Professional Education.
