What is an excerpt?

Lara Pierpoint

is a PhD student in the Engineering Systems Division. She has a dual masters degree in Nuclear Engineering and Technology and Policy, and focuses on management of spent nuclear fuel. Her research combines decision analysis and technical risk assessment tools in order to assist decisionmakers in establishing a nuclear fuel cycle architecture for the U.S. Her work experience includes internships at the Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy, the National Academy of Sciences, and research in the Nuclear Physics Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Dorm Electricity Competition

The Dorm Electricity Competition is the first of its kind in MIT's history. All eleven undergrad dorms will compete this spring to conserve the most electricity over a two month period. The winning dorm will receive $10,000 in energy efficient retrofits and dorm improvements. Come be a part of this exciting new, event and change the way MIT uses energy.

Biodiesel@MIT

An emerging MIT campus energy project devoted to converting MIT waste vegetable oil into biodiesel for consumption in the MIT shuttle fleet. This project intends to implement waste vegetable oil processing and use as biodiesel, as well as pushing advanced research into biodiesel quality issues and biodiesel production from high oil content algae. Organizations with intent to support Biodiesel@MIT include the MIT Energy Club, MIT Facilities, the MIT Environmental Programs Office, and GreenFuel Technologies.

MIT Solar Decathlon Team

MIT is fielding a team for the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon Competition for the first time. Get involved in building an advanced modular solar home!

The Solar Decathlon is an international competition challenging college teams from around the globe to blend aesthetics and modern conveniences with maximum energy production and optimal efficiency. The purpose of the competition is to challenge students to think in new ways about energy, to increase public awareness about renewable energy and energy efficiency and to help move solar energy technologies to the marketplace faster.

MIT Solar Electric Vehicle Team

Over the past 20 years, the MIT Solar Electric Vehicle Team (SEVT) has designed and built 10 vehicles and raced them all over the world. We have promoted alternative energy and transportation through our participation in races as well as in local fairs and community events. We are committed to continuing our strong racing tradition and also to solving real-world transportation problems with efficient, green, and appropriate design. We are always looking for new members at every level of experience.

Entrepreneurship Activities

MIT has a long history of developing successful technology and business concepts which commercialize in many different ways. As a multidiscipline, student run organization, the MIT Energy Club has formed an entrepreneurship team with a mission to accelerate entrepreneurship in energy across the campus. Three initiatives are currently underway to educate and assist students in pursuing energy startup ideas:

Fall Discussion Series Session

Starting a Business as a MIT Student” – In conjunction with the MIT Energy Club Discussion Series, a session will be held in the fall of 2008 with a group of MIT students and alumni who have recently pursued a startup at various stages: taking technology fresh out of the lab, ramping up a business, and scaling down an unsuccessful effort.

CleanTechnology Series

The focus of this series is in educating MIT engineering students in the science and technology behind current early stage companies in the energy space, and how they fit in America’s rapidly evolving energy marketplace. High level, technical speakers from companies representing a variety of alternative energy spaces will present and lead discussions throughout the Fall 2008 semester. Light dinner and a social hour at a campus pub will be provided with funds from external sponsors.

Energy Club Entrepreneurship Lab (ECEL)

The ECEL's mission is to promote collaboration between students across all departments at MIT to form successful startup teams for commercializing new energy business concepts. With world leading science, engineering, policy and business schools and club membership of over 800 people, the energy club has the broad base of expertise needed for assisting startups in all areas of energy innovation.
